What is fibre?

Fibre-optic technology delivers high-speed data through glass cabling which makes it more stable and reliable. Vodacom Fibre uses flexible glass cable instead of copper, and therefore, it’s less susceptible to bad weather, lightning and theft, giving you unprecedented reliability.

What can you use fibre for?

Streaming – Unfortunately, binging means bulk. If you want to stream live, then you need data quantity for quality and speed to avoid those buffering breakups. 10Mbps is a good minimum speed but the recommendation is 20Mbps and upwards. As for data, you ideally want 75GB or even uncapped. Streaming over a fibre line makes the experience so much better.
Downloads, email and browsing – You want a high data plan with any speed, because fibre is fast even on the lowest setting (8Mbps). As a guesstimate guide to working out how much data to get: movies average 1.5 to 4GB in size and songs are roughly 50MB. So if you want to download just three movies, check some emails and check social media, fibre enables you to do this seamlessly.
Gaming – With an average twitch reflex of under 25 milliseconds, gamers need fast uploads. Speed is king and fibre lines that deliver 50Mbps and upwards will give anyone a good online experience.

5G is around 10 times faster than 4G! Given enough spectrum, it will work at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, and peak speeds will reach above 1Gbps. This means you’ll be able to download a full HD film in around 3 minutes (compared to over 15 minutes on 4G).

· 5G works at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, while 4G works at average speeds of only 23-35Mbps.

· By default, 5G will reach peak speeds higher than 1Gbps, but basic 4G works at a maximum speed of only 150Mbps, while 4G EVO (a later, faster version of 4G) can reach up to 500Mbps depending on device capability and the number of carriers deployed.

 

5G speeds can vary and depend on multiple factors: how far away you are from a mast, which spectrum is being used, and how many people around you are using 5G.

Movies, gaming or music downloads are more convenient and amplified with 5G. If you have many different devices to connect inside a large home, 5G supports your experience on each device so that it’s seamless and uninterrupted

Browse our 5G deals online and check if you fall within a 5G coverage area. If your home is located within a 5G-supported area, please choose the contract you would like to sign up for.

 

Your SIM will be provisioned for 5G within 24 hours after you’ve activated a 5G contract with us. If you’re using a 5G-compatible device in an area that doesn’t have 5G coverage, it will automatically fall back to the Vodacom signal that’s available there. Your 5G smartphone will then automatically reconnect to the 5G network once you’re back in a 5G area.

You may still sign up for any of our 4G deals available. Also, please leave your details and we will contact you as soon as 5G becomes available in your area.

If you already own a 5G device, we’ll ensure that your SIM is provisioned for 5G within 24 hours after you’ve activated a Vodacom 5G contract. You just need to be in an area that has 5G coverage to be able to experience the 5G network.

Voice and SMS (outgoing) services will not be available on 5G. Our 5G data contracts should be able to receive SMSs. Data Sharing SIM will also not be available on the 5G data contracts.
